Has it really been five years since Sony launched the console?
Today marks five years since Sony launched the PlayStation 4, and the company took the opportunity to release some sales info and to announce a new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 bundle.
In a PlayStation Blog post, Senior Vice President of PlayStation Worldwide Marketing Eric Lempel revealed Sony has sold more than 86.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles and 777.9 million pieces of software to date. Lempel also shared PlayStation 4’s five best-selling games (in alphabetical order):
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
- Call of Duty: WW2
- FIFA 17
- FIFA 18
- Grand Theft Auto V
The console’s most popular games (i.e. the ones played the most) are virtually the same, except for a certain free-to-play title nudging Call of Duty: WW2 out of the top five. Unsurprisingly, that title is Fortnite. The most downloaded free PS Plus games list features Black Ops 3, Destiny 2, Dead by Daylight, Just Cause 2, and Mafia 3.
Also revealed were PlayStation 4’s best-selling DualShock 4 controller colors (outside of the standard black), with Steel Black at the top of the list. Rounding out the top five are blue, red, white, and camouflage variants.
The new bundle Lempel announced in the post will be released on Nov. 27 and includes a standard PlayStation 4 console and retail version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The bundle will cost $299.99 USD ($379.99 CAN).
Last month, Sony reached much further back in its console history than five years, announcing the PlayStation Classic, which feels fun but incomplete.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 just received its own nostalgic classic in the form of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which recaptures some of the magic of those original PlayStation days.
